To execute the call successfully, the message must be in the pendingprocessing state, and your participant must be set up for the processing state. Otherwise the call returns 422. After the message has been marked as in process, its status changes to processing.
The change is sent as a messageStatusChanged webhook event, as your own change.

When marking a message as being imported into an ERP system, please use the Mark as delivered route. The
pendingprocessingandprocessingstates are optional, for a processing system such as an approval system that works on the message before the ERP. See Processing step.
